Dhaulagiri Base Camp trek is one of the best high adventure-trek in Nepal. It is one of the most challenging trek of Nepal. This trek provides the spectacular view of the Annapurna ranges, Dhaulagiri ranges, Mt. Manaslu and other Himalayan ranges.
You should be prepared to travel in snow condition for an extended period over a week and rough weather. Previous trek experience in the mountain is necessary. You should be physically fit. Consider the trek a grade higher than trek to Makalu base camp. It is an adventurous trek and a big massif, which spreads around 120 kilometers/ 70 miles starts from the Kaligandaki River in the east to the Bheri River in the west. Which includes Dhaulagiri I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII and other smaller peaks. Out of them, Dhaulagiri I (8167m) is the highest one. The trek offers amazing panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri as well as Annapurna Himalayan range with diversified geographic topography from the green forests to treeless Alpine land. The Dhaulagiri trekking route is also the habitat of different indigenous groups of Nepal. Their lifestyle and culture provide extra joyfulness to all trekkers.
The perfect time of Dhaulagiri Base Camp trek is from September to November and March to May. Within this time, the mountain passes are less likely to cover with snow. Day 01: Arrival
On arrival at Tribhuvan international airport, Kathmandu. Our representative will receive you. Meet, assist and transfer to the hotel. Stay overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
Day 02: Rest Day in Kathmandu
Trek Preparation day.
Day 03: Kathmandu to Pokhara by flight and drive to Darbang by jeep.
On this day, we drive or take a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. We will have our lunch on the way to Pokhara. It will take us 30 minutes on flight then, we take a jeep to Darbang. Along the countryside, we will find the scenic beauty that is very enjoyable. Our journey through jeep moves along Beni, which is the district headquarter. Beni also has a police check post where your trekking permits will be examine. Beni is at the confluence of the Myagdi Khola and the Kali Gandaki River. After travelling for few hours from Beni we reach the Darbang village, which is the starting point for our trek.
Day 04: Darbang to Takam (1200m); Trek (6-7) Hrs.
On this day, we have to climb about 500 meters up. We cross a river on the suspension bridge after just 30 minutes of our walk. After climbing up hills from Darbang village, we reach Dharapani. We have our lunch at Dharapani. If the weather is clear, we can have the view of Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal ranges from Dharapani. After lunch, we walk along the forest full of Salla trees. All the village we meet up during our trek are Magar villages. Then we move through the forest of Chilaune and Salla and walk about 300 meters up from Dharapani to reach Takam. From Takam too we can have the view of the Himalayan ranges.
Day 05: Takam to Jukepani (1349 m); Trek
From Takam we will walk on the gradient rock until Muri. Muri is a small village that offers beautiful view of Manapathi Peak and entire Dhaulagiri ranges. We reach Muri after about 3 hours walk from Jukepani. We will Lunch at Muri. We then move through the forest of Chilaune and Salla. After 3 hours walk from Muri, we reach to the Jukepani village. From Jukepani we can have the view of Dhaulagiri ranges, Churen Himal, Putali Himal and other Himalayan ranges. Jukepani is a Magar village. We can visit the Magar village to learn their life style and cultures. We make our overnight camp at Jukepani.
Day 06: Jukepani to Boghara (2100 m); Trek (4-5) Hrs.
From Jukepani to Boghara, the trek route is short. Therefore, we will have lunch and will camp for night at Boghara. It takes us only 4-5 hours to reach Boghara. It is a small village. Then during the day when we have free time at Boghara we can explore the area around Boghara. From Boghara we rarely find any house up our trail. Overnight stay at the tented camp.
Day 07: Boghara to Dobang (2500m); Trek (6-7) Hrs.
From Boghara the trail becomes quite challenging and steep ascend but it is exciting and enjoyable too. The trek moves along the dense forests. We may be able to meet flora and fauna. We have our lunch at Bhaise kharka. We move forward then descend through terraced fields it leads us to a small ridge, then we move through a forest to reach Jyardan. It is the most remote permanent settlement in this region. After Jyardan, a high winding path crosses a rocky area. We then descend down and then start to climb up until we reach Lipshe. The trail continues through a forest to Lapche Kharka and then climbs to the level area at Dobang
Day 08: Dobang to Sallaghari (3110m); Trek (4-5) Hrs.
We will descend through variety of beautiful forest such as bamboo, pine, rhododendrons etc. Gradually we will climb uphill and go downhill for few hours to reach Sallaghari. Sallaghari is good place for camping, next to the Myagdi River. We make our overnight camp at Sallaghari. The dense forest ends after Sallaghari
Day 09: Sallaghari to Italian Base Camp (3600m); Trek (4-5) Hrs.
Our trek continues and the trail to the Italian Base Camp through the mostly dominated bamboo forest. We can find two teashops, which supplies trekking items. We have our lunch in Italian Base Camp. From the Italian Camp we will have a spectacular view of Dhaulagiri ranges, Manapathi peak, Dhaulagiri II and several unnamed mountains. We make our overnight camp in Italian Camp.
Day 10: Rest day at Italian Base Camp
Today, we will acclimatize which will include a short walk to higher altitude and back to prepare for the further two challenging high altitude days. We will visit the Himalayan Rescue Association. Back to the Italian Base Camp. Stay overnight at the tented camp.
Day 11: Italian base camp to Chhonbarden Glacier (Japanese base camp)
We set up early in the morning for the trek expecting the favorable weather. The way (trail) from Italian Camp to Japanese Camp is prone to stone fall. Our trail also passes through a narrow gorge. On this day, the trail is fairly challenging, tough and dangerous. We should be careful and never play with glacier. The glacier camp offers extremely spectacular view of different mountains, landscape, hills etc. We make our night camp at Japanese Base Camp.
Day 12: Chhonbarden to Dhaulagiri Base Camp (4748m); Trek
This day of our trek will be one of the adventurous days of our Dhaulagiri base camp trek. After walking for few hours, we will climb up through a challenging trail and gradually we will see Dhaulagiri Base Camp. From the Dhaulagiri base camp, we can have the impressive view of the north face of Dhaulagiri I (8,167m). To the west of Dhaulagiri base camp, we can see the high Himalayan peaks like peaks of Dhaulagiri II (7,751m), Dhaulagiri III (7,715m) and Dhaulagiri V (7,618m). In addition, in the front part we can see the impressive icefall.
Day 13: Dhaulagiri Base Camp to French Col. Hidden Valley (5360m); Trek
After crossing the glacier we climb through the two terraced hills, the field runs along the glacier. We will need rope many times to reduce danger. Then we climb to the French Pass (5,360m). From the French Pass, we will be able to see Mukut Himal (6,328m), Tashi Kang (6,386m) and Sita Chuchura (6,611m), all of which surround the Hidden Valley. The view seen from the French pass is awesome. We can also see the Tukche Peak (6,920m) in the south. We continue our trek along the Hidden valley crossing the Thapa Pass (5,250m) that lies between Tukche Peak and Thapa Peak (6,012m). After reaching to the place where we make our overnight camp we then climb to the top of French Col (5300m). From French Col, we will have the awe-inspiring view of the hidden valley.
Day 14: Hidden Valley to Yak Kharka via Dhampus Pass (5258m); Trek (6-7) Hrs.
From hidden valley, we descend down to the Dhampus Pass and continue our trek to Yak Kharka. There is a perfect campsite to enjoy the surroundings. On this day, we pass through avalanche-prone slopes. Then we take on the steep descent to Yak Kharka. This day we also trek through the barren land.
Day 15: Yak Kharka to Marpha (2660m); Trek (5-6) Hrs.
Today, we make more steep descent to Marpha. The path is clear and not much covered with trees. On the way, we may see some yak herds and sheep herds as well. Marpha is a small town mainly inhabited by the mixed community of Buddhist and Hindus as well. It is the Thakali village. We will have the famous Nepali Thakali cuisine.
Day 16: Marpha to Jomsom (2720m); Trek (3-4) Hrs.
One this day we will have a short descend down to Jomsom. It is just 3-4 hours walk to Jomsom. On this day, we will have spare time to explore around the Thakali villages, and Buddhist monasteries. Jomsom is a beautiful place and we will experience high wind in Jomsom. We will have a lunch in hotel at Jomsom and then spend a night there.
Day 17: Fly Jomsom to Kathmandu via Pokhara
